Rebuild Schools After the Earthquake
I was in Colombia this summer, staying with my grandparents. My mom is from Pereira, so I’ve been going there my whole life.
On the morning of August 10, a 7.4 earthquake hit. We were lucky. Everyone in my family was okay.
A lot of people weren’t. It was the strongest earthquake Colombia has recorded this century, and it went straight through the coffee region: homes, hospitals, schools. What stayed with me afterward wasn’t the shaking. It was finding out how many kids just didn’t have a school to go back to. The UN counted 3,483 damaged school buildings.
So on October 18, we’re playing for them.

Stronger Brighter Together

We partnered with Fundeagro, a foundation based thirty minutes from Pereira. They’re not new to this, they’ve worked in the area for years, running health brigades and a program that supports rural teachers.
Every dollar donated goes to rebuilding those classrooms. Not some of it. All of it.
I know a chess tournament in Marin County can’t fix an earthquake in Colombia. But maybe kids playing chess on a Sunday and your support can put a roof back on a school. That seems worth doing.
You don’t need to play chess to help.
Maybe your kid isn’t into chess. Maybe you’re reading this from three states away. That’s okay, the donate button works just as well without a chessboard involved.
